🇯🇵 Japan Immigration Protest Explained
By Nikhil-kun | Indian living in Japan
Recently, you might have seen news or WhatsApp forwards saying:
❌ “Japan is giving cities to Africa” ❌ “Japan is bringing lakhs of immigrants” ❌ “Foreigners will take over Japan”
Relax. Let me explain what is really happening, in simple words, no drama.

Thousands of people rally against Japan’s immigration reforms
🚶♂️ What Happened in Tokyo?
In Tokyo, more than 7,000 people gathered and protested against new immigration-related rules being discussed in Japan’s parliament.
📍 The protest started near United Nations University 📍 People marched till Shibuya
Even students from top universities like Keio and Waseda joined.
Why were they protesting?
Because some people believe:
- Japan’s refugee system is unfair
- Refugees don’t get enough legal protection
- Detention centers treat people badly
This protest was peaceful and legal.

⚠️ Why Indians Should Care?
Because foreigners living in Japan (including Indians) get affected when:
- Immigration rules change
- Public opinion turns negative
- Fake news spreads
And recently, a LOT of fake news spread.
🌍 The JICA Africa Program (Very Simple Explanation)
Here is where most confusion started.
What is JICA?
JICA = Japan International Cooperation Agency (Like India’s foreign aid programs, but Japanese version)
What was the plan?
JICA started a friendship & training program with African countries.
Some Japanese cities were called “Africa Hometowns” this is symbolic, not literal.
What it ACTUALLY means:
✔️ Short-term training ✔️ Cultural exchange ✔️ Internships ✔️ People return home after training
What it DOES NOT mean:
❌ No permanent settlement ❌ No mass immigration ❌ No special visas ❌ No land given to anyone
📰 One Wrong Word = Full Confusion
An overseas newspaper used the word “dedicate” instead of “designate”.
Because of that:
- People thought cities were “given away”
- Social media went crazy
- Fake news exploded
Posts started saying:
“Japanese cities belong to Africa now”
Totally false

The family of the young Sri Lankan woman Wishma Sandamari, who died in a detention center in Nagoya after being refused medical treatment, gave a speech before the start of the demonstration. Wishma’s two sisters criticized remarks by politician UMEMURA Mizuho of the Innovation Party, who implied that Wishma was responsible for her own death and refused to apologize for his remarks.
📞 Japanese Cities Got Attacked (Verbally)
Because of this fake news:
🏙️ Kisarazu City
- ~200 angry phone calls daily
- People shouting “Stop immigrants”
🏙️ Sanjo City
- 7,000 complaints
- City hall name changed online to “Ghana City Hall” (trolling)
- Official visit canceled
🏙️ Imabari City
- Graffiti saying “No Immigrants” written inside city hall
🏙️ Nagai City
- Still receiving hate messages
- City officials begging people to understand the truth

😔 Even JICA Office Faced Protests
Around 100 people protested outside JICA HQ in Tokyo.
They shouted:
- “Use tax money for Japanese only”
- “Stop immigration”
- “Dismantle JICA”
This shows how misinformation can make people angry fast.
🤯 Similar Fake News Happened Before Too
🚄 “Indians Will Drive Bullet Trains”
When PM Modi visited Japan, a training post became:
“Indians will run Shinkansen”
False.

💰 “Japan Giving 10 Trillion Yen to India”
Actually:
- It was private investment
- Not taxpayer money
Still, fake news spread like fire.
🧠 Nikhil-kun’s Honest Indian View
As an Indian living in Japan, here’s my honest take:
👉 Japan is NOT suddenly opening borders 👉 Japan is NOT inviting mass immigrants 👉 Japan is VERY careful about immigration
But:
- Japanese public is sensitive about this topic
- Fake news scares people easily
- Foreigners become easy targets
That’s why responsible information matters.
🇮🇳 What Indians in Japan Should Do
✔️ Don’t panic ✔️ Don’t forward unverified news ✔️ Follow official sources ✔️ Understand that protests ≠ policy change
Japan still needs:
- Engineers
- IT professionals
- Care workers
- Skilled foreign talent
Nothing has changed overnight
